The peace isn’t the absence of war

Christ said: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

So, the peace isn’t the absence of war – it is the presence of Christ. The entire ascetic life should open our soul to Christ’s presence. If this doesn’t happen, then everything else is just a surrogate which in a final analysis is of little help.

Hence, in order to gain peace we must lead a life which will ensure us the necessary stillness for prayer and contemplation while allowing us to sacrifice ourselves for others in order to experience the joy of love.
