Obedience is necessary not only for monks, but for everyone. Even the Lord was obedient, even unto death on the cross. Proud and self-regarding people don’t allow grace to live within them, and so they lack spiritual peace, whereas the grace of the Holy Spirit enters easily into the obedient soul, bringing great joy and peace.
Those who bear even a little grace within themselves submit gladly to direction. They know that God directs everything, from the heavens to the netherworld, themselves and their business, and everything other thing in the world, and so they’re always at peace.
