The critical significance of death isn’t that it’s the end of life. Our immortal soul continues to exist after death.
The concomitant of death lies in the fact that afterwards the soul cannot help itself anymore to improve its existential state vis-à-vis God.
So your soul relies on the prayers and acts of faith performed by those who are still in their earthly existence- what we call ‘life’. The Church has special prayers and services for the departed which demonstrate its universal love for all people, and also recognize that we’re all still alive.
In this photograph, a priest reads a prayer for the departed in front of the icon of Christ while blessing the kolyva.
