A short description of the rational aspects of the soul

St. John of Damascus says that the soul is intelligent and noetic. God gave man “an intelligent and noetic soul for proper breathing”. It is a basic teaching of the Fathers that nous and intelligence are two parallel energies of the soul. St. Gregory Palamas, referring to the fact that the soul is in the image of the Holy Trinity, and writing that the Holy Trinity is Nous, Word and Spirit, says that the soul, created by God in His image “is endowed with nous, word and spirit.” Therefore she must guard her order, relate entirely to God. She must look at God alone, adorn herself with constant memory and contemplation and with the warmest and ardent love for Him.
