Spiritual experience always comes first and foremost. Saint Nektarios states, ‘I consider a monk superior to an archbishop’, not of course, meaning any disrespect to archbishops. Rather, he wanted to stress the fact that the ascetic life of the monks allows for the best conditions to reach sainthood and acquire that spiritual experience. That’s why the vast majority of saints are monks.
Let’s not forget that our purpose in life is to “become holy as I am holy”.
