Seek what’s simplest in all things, in food and clothing, and don’t be ashamed of poverty. A great part of the world lives in poverty. Don’t say, ‘I’m the son of a rich man. It’s shameful for me to find myself poor’. Christ, your Heavenly Father, Who gave birth to you in the baptistery, isn’t rich in the worldly sense. Rather, He walked in poverty and had nowhere to lay His head.
The rich exist for the sake of the poor. The poor exist for the salvation of the rich.
St. Gennadius of Constantinople, St. John Chrysostom
