The proof that you did something properly

Before any great undertaking there’s a wondrous cross. Don’t distress yourself, though, because the joy of your resurrection will more than compensate for all that you suffer. If your task is completed without trials and sorrows, or without the need to bear a cross, you should know that it wasn’t completed properly.

Based on St. Isaac the Syrian

This photograph shows the cross where St. Efthymios, a monk of Vatopaidi, was martyred, with the monastery of Vatopaidi is in the background.
