The most important thing in life is to receive light from God. For this we must first humble ourselves and follow a virtuous way of life in order for our souls and our hearts to be enlightened. This doesn’t necessarily entail great intellectual knowledge.
This is especially true for bishops, because, as Elder Païsios of Mt. Athos said, the spiritual life of the entire flock is a reflection of that of its bishop.
