An iconographer should ideally have an intense ascetic life, since his internal state will be reflected in the way he paints his icons. In general, all artists express their internal world through their external art. That’s why everybody, but especially artists, must, with their internal eye, depict the beauty of Paradise rather than the pain of Hell.
