Fruitless trees

Abba Isaac says that people who don’t have a merciful cast of mind are like trees without fruit.

It doesn’t matter what your ascetic endeavors are –prayers, fasts and vigils–, unless your heart’s merciful, unless it’s loving towards other people, unless it’s fond of them, as God is of all of us, then we’re like trees without fruit.
